On August 25th, 2018, a charity hackathon event tagged ‘do-action’ will be hosted by WordPress Port Harcourt to equip deserving non-profit organizations with a fully functional website built with WordPress. The hackathon will take place at The Arena – 39, Tombia Street GRA II Port Harcourt at 8am and will include a workshop to train the selected non-profit organizations on how to manage a WordPress website.
‘do-action’ is coined from a core function in WordPress.
According to the organizer of WordPress Port Harcourt, Anthony Great, the goal is not just to design a website, but also to provide services in graphic design and social media which will help “give the selected non-profits a lift.” Another member of the organizing team, Chukwudi Igbojionu, noted that the remarkable thing about the hackathon is that “all these will be built by volunteers, all in one day.”
A hackathon is an event where groups of computer programmers and other tech-oriented people collaborate intensely on projects using software. This hackathon will involve volunteers comprising graphic designers, social media managers, project managers, and WordPress developers.
Applications were submitted by several non-profit organizations that needed free websites, as well as volunteers willing to help out with designing them. After consideration, the volunteers were notified about the selected organizations and were given an opportunity to choose which of them they wanted to work with.
The organizers of the event believe that by volunteering their services, the volunteers can gain valuable experience working with organizations which would help improve their profile.
Besides the free website design, the selected nonprofit organizations will be provided with free web hosting for 3 years by GrottoPress.com, a web hosting company based in Ghana; as well as free .ng domains from Upperlink.ng.
